Nativity Play – What and Why?
A production of a nativity play is often one of the most important features in the annual calendar of events for lots of religious schools and churches.
Taken from the Latin word for birth, “natal” the word “nativity” signifies the birth of Jesus.
Christmas or the nativity is celebrated each year by Christians all over the world on the 25th day of December. Although no one knows the exact date of the birth of Jesus, Christians celebrate his birth on this day as an accepted fact.
A Nativity Play is performed to essentially recreate the scene in the stable when Jesus of Nazereth was born. The story is taken from the Bible passages that relate to the story of the birth of Christ and the verses provide the basis for the narration. Sometimes dialog is added to round ot the play, other times there is a narrator and the children just reenact the scenes silently.
Most of the primary Christmas play action takes place in the stable where Jesus was born. Mary and Joseph are the main characters, with a supporting cast including the shepherds and The Three Wise Men and various animals. Children and adults alike are enchanted by this popular story.
Angels often appear, but the majority of audiences enjoy the appearance of the Three Wise Men who bear gifts of gold, frankinsence and myrrh. Guided by the Star of Bethlehem, they find the stable and present their gifts to the baby Jesus.
Actual animals, including ox, lambs and the donkey that Mary rides to the stable on, once appeared in these types of plays but it is an uncommon practice now. Most of the time, children take on the roles of the animals and are charming in their costumes. Sometimes painted prop animals are also used.
This story carries plenty of symbolism, it is a Christian message which is conveyed and serves to remind people that there is a traditional religious meaning of Christmas.
