Dressing up your Christmas Party

It’s that time of year again when many people will be planning there next get together with friends and family. If you, like many others, are tired of the same old party and find that people start to leave earlier than expected then it may be time for a change in plans. An idea is to make your party a fancy dress party where guests can come in an array of different costumes from many eras.

Fancy dress parties are great fun and there is always the anticipation of what everyone is going to dress up as. The fun and laughter that can be had from a fancy dress party will stay with everyone for years to come as you will have many pictures and videos to look back on and remember. It is not every day that you can have Batman, Bart Simpson and Wonderwoman in the same photograph and it is certainly something that will have everyone talking.

Office Christmas parties are always good fun and by making them fancy dress so can be sure the office will be buzzing when everyone returns to work as their normal selves. You can even make them more fun by coming up with a prize for the best costume as this will give everyone a reason to put more effort into their costumes. You will be surprised to see how much a prize can bring out everyone’s competitive nature!

Choosing fancy dress costumes can be tricky but only because there are so many options available. If you are organising a fancy dress party it is best to set a theme, for example make it a 70’s theme or from a certain film (but if you choose a film, make sure there are plenty of characters to choose from). Having a theme gives everybody a starting point at least. There are costumes of many types available including superheroes like Batman and Superman and cartoon characters such as Bananaman.

There have been many blockbuster films recently and these characters are available to purchase and are very impressive. You could have a good guys versus bad guys’ party and mix up people who come as villains with those who come as the heroes and good guys. Fancy dress spans many different parties and you can buy them all online. They are great for stag and hens parties with all the traditional accessories available for your special night. There are plenty of options whether you are looking for mens or womens fancy dress.

Planning a Great Christmas Party

The holiday season is the time for festivities and parties. It’s the time when everyone is looking forward to meet up with families and friends to have fun and celebrate the season. Whether you are planning an intimate dinner party with your closest friends or organizing a big family reunion for your relatives, there are special touches that you can do to make the party spectacular. The key in planning a memorable Christmas party is to plan ahead of time. This way, you’ll have more time to decide on the menu, the decorations, and everything else. You’ll also have more time to send out the invitations, if you’re using them, or to call the people you’re inviting. Here are some things to focus on when planning a Christmas party.Choose Creative DecorationsOf course you can always stick with the usual decorations such as Christmas socks in the chimney, mistletoes on the door posts and so on. However, if you want to hold a unique party that your guests will definitely remember, you can go for a creative theme and decorate accordingly. For example, you can choose themes such as Arabian Nights, Winter Wonderland, Fairy Tale, Back to the 80′s, Santa’s Workshop and so on. If you’re going for the Moroccan theme, then you can decorate with colorful fabric swags or even Moroccan tents. You can also have bright carpets and small pillows where people can sit back and relax while sipping wine. If you’re going for a Fairy Tale theme, you can make the place look like Cinderella’s ball.Your guests will usually make their first impression based on the decorations, so be creative. However, you shouldn’t spend too much on these, so go bargain hunting to find the decorations you need at an affordable price.Have Great EntertainmentSet the tone of your party by having great music playing at a comfortable volume to create ambience. You don’t even need to get a DJ or have someone playing the songs for you; you just need to make a playlist ahead of time and hook up your computer or MP3 player to a decent sound system before the party starts. Make sure you include a mixture of holiday classics, Christmas carols, and some danceable tunes to the playlist to keep things interesting. Have more than enough songs in your playlist so that each song will only be played twice (or thrice at the most) because nothing is more irritating than hearing the same song over and over again when it is playing on a loop.Focus on the FoodNo matter how great the decorations are or how fabulous the entertainment is, your guests won’t be too happy if there isn’t enough food or if the food does not taste good. Serve some hors d’oeuvres or finger food which your guests can nibble on all night. Make sure you also have light meals like salad, pasta or sandwiches to keep them from getting hungry. Have an assortment of desserts that they can choose from, such as cupcakes, gingerbread or ice cream. Serve both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.  GP

Tips for a Planning a Fabulous Company Christmas Party

Planning a simple office party for your department – where everybody knows everybody else – is quite different from planning your company Christmas party, which involves everyone within the corporation from the staff members to the senior executives. Parties at the corporate level are usually more lavish than intimate office parties since there are usually VIP guests in attendance, such as important clients, heads of other businesses or even competitors. If you’re tasked to plan your company Christmas party, there are several things you must remember.Start Planning Ahead of TimeThe month of December is not the time to start planning your company Christmas party. Such a short planning time could work for small Christmas parties for your department or among friends, but this can’t work for parties that will have at least 100 people in attendance. Start planning early enough so that you won’t need to rush around.Set up a committee to plan the party with you, especially if you’re looking at potentially a thousand guests or more. It would be great if you can get people from different departments so that you will also have an idea of what other people want from the party. Schedule regular monthly meetings by July or August, then increase the frequency to weekly by October.List down everything you need to accomplish as a committee and cross off each item once it is completed. Even if the tasks are distributed among the committee members, someone should still keep a main list to monitor the progress of the group. Planning a company Christmas party can be very stressful to everyone in the steering committee, so it would really help if there is one person who can keep a running tally of what has been accomplished already and what still needs to be done. Choose a Great ThemeIn planning company Christmas parties, remember that there is a need to impress not just the employees of the company, but the VIP guests as well. The best company Christmas parties always have a central theme that is reflected in the choice of decorations, entertainment, food and program. However, before you decide on the theme, check the budget restrictions first. Will management provide all the funds for the party or are the employees required to share the cost? How much is the total budget that you can use? There are several themes you can choose from. You can go for a Moroccan theme complete with entertainers (or employees) dressed up as sultans and belly dancers to welcome guests to the venue. You can go for a 70′s theme with psychedelic lighting and 70′s music in the background. To get the latest ideas for a theme, you can always check the internet.Pick the Right VenueThe venue can either make or break the party. No matter how great the theme is, if the venue you chose is cramped, or chilly, or difficult to locate, you can be sure to receive complaints. A hotel function room is a popular choice for company Christmas parties because they are usually easy to find, has sufficient parking space, and guests can choose to stay overnight (at their personal expense) if they get too drunk to drive home afterwards.  GP

Creative Ideas for Unique Christmas Party Decorations

If you’re planning a party this Christmas, surprise your guests with unique and memorable Christmas party decorations. Remember, the decorations are very important because they are usually the first thing your guests will notice upon arriving at your house. In addition, the decorations will set the tone for your party.Don’t be satisfied with generic decorations like wreaths and red flowers, which you can see nearly everywhere. If you want your guests to remember your party, make sure you have memorable decorations. Here are some creative ideas for unique Christmas party decorations that your guests will be talking about for days.Walk in the Winter WonderlandCreate the Winter Wonderland effect by using mainly white decorations on the entire venue. Use white fabric swags in the ceilings and walls, cover your tables with white tablecloth tied with a silver bow, stick paper snowflake cutouts on the windows, and put up a polystrene snow man in the center of the room. Fill glass bowls with white food items such as marshmallows, popcorns, mints and white chocolate and put these in all of the cocktail tables or in strategic areas around the room. You can even lower the thermostat in your heater so that the room will be chilly for your guests, but make sure they are still comfortable and not feeling too cold. If you want, you can also rent an ice skating rink and have a skating Winter Wonderland party. You could even have a couple of ice sculptures around the rink as decorations. If it’s really a white Christmas for you this year and it’s snowing in your area, then take advantage of the lovely weather and make a couple of snowmen outside to greet the guests. Serve hot chocolate to complete the winter feel.Celebrate the Twelve Days of ChristmasMake the Christmas carol come alive in your party by paying homage to the 12 days of Christmas. Think of quirky ways to incorporate the items mentioned in the song. For example, in order to represent the “five golden rings,” you can put 5 wreaths decorated with gold Christmas balls in a prominent area. In order to represent the “twelve drummers drumming,” you can dress up a couple of cocktail tables to look like drums. To represent the “three French hens,” you can serve three different kinds of chicken dishes. You can even tie fresh pears in a tree to represent the pear tree.Have Fun at Santa’s WorkshopMake the Christmas party really fun and encourage all guests to come in costume, either as fairies, dolls, toys, elves or Santa’s little helpers. Make sure to assign someone to come in full Santa Claus gear, complete with a huge sack filled with “gifts.” Spread colorful toys and various tools around the venue to make the place look like a huge workshop. Wrap a couple of cardboard boxes to look like gifts and place them in strategic areas. Serve your food in noodle boxes wrapped like a Christmas gift. For dessert, serve common children’s favorites such as gingerbread, cupcakes and candy canes.  GP

Meaningful Ways to Celebrate Christmas for the Family

In today’s commercialized world, people seem to think that Christmas simply means presents and parties, shopping and Santa Claus, bright lights and late nights. The truth is that it is really easy to forget the real reason of Christmas in the midst of the frenzy of activities held during December, from parties with friends to visits from relatives. If you want to celebrate the season differently, you can look for more meaningful traditions or activities. After all, Christmas is all about God the Father giving His only Son to the world because of His love for us. Therefore, the best way to enjoy Christmas is through activities where we give to others or show our love to one another. Here are some ideas that you may want to try with your family to celebrate Christmas in a more meaningful way.Give Love on Christmas DayIt’s not enough to just give love, sometimes you need to give more material things as well. Here are some creative ideas to make giving more enjoyable for your family. If you know a family who is financially struggling in your neighborhood, you can prepare a huge gift box for them that contain the things they need such as the ingredients for a Christmas dinner, and other things like clothes, books and toys. You can also visit a children’s hospital, an orphanage, a homeless shelter or an old folks’ home and distribute small gifts. Bring some food and treat them to a simple Christmas snack which can be composed of anything from pasta to candies. You can do this with friends, colleagues or even your entire family. Activities such as these, where you reach out to those who are in need, will remind you for sure of how blessed you are and how important it is to share your blessings to those who are less fortunate.Remember the Christmas StoryGet your Bible out and read the Christmas story with your children every night, while sipping hot chocolate. Start on the first day of December and read only short passages, culminating on the passage describing the birth of Jesus before you have your Christmas Eve dinner. You can even have your children act out the story. Sing traditional Christmas carols together to get you in the holiday mood. This is a wonderful time not only to remember the Christmas story, but to spend quality time with your kids and help them understand the real meaning of Christmas.Start a New Christmas Tradition It’s time to start a new family Christmas tradition. You can spend the first Saturday of December cleaning the house, setting up the tree and putting up the decorations. Make sure you have traditional Christmas carols playing in the background while you’re all working. Afterwards, settle down with a mug of hot chocolate and some popcorn. You can divide the family into two – the first half will go out to find a good Christmas tree, while the other half will stay at home to prepare a special meal. Whatever you choose, just remember that the most important part of Christmas is in the first syllable of the word – Christ. Enjoy your holiday!  GP

The Fun of Fancy Dress

As children most people wanted to become fantastic characters or heroic figures from television, the movies or favorite stories. Just because someone has “grown up” however, does not mean that they must abandon the joy of fancy dress and costumes.

Today there is an enormous amount of business around fancy dress and costumes for events that take place year round. Though the Halloween season is probably the time of year with the heaviest demand for ensembles, accessories and props, there are many other reasons that people don a disguise.

Among the most popular costumes are those of historic and famous individuals, from Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe, to Marie Antoinette and Robin Hood, people love to pretend they are their idols or heroes.

One of the biggest mistakes people make when choosing their fancy dress gear is to forget about props and makeup. Slipping into a white billowy dress and a platinum blonde wig might let people know you are “supposed” to be Marilyn Monroe, but an individual can really “wow” friends and family when they seek out the correct makeup and jewelry as well as appropriate shoes and other items that will complete the look.

Wearing fancy dress doesn’t mean becoming someone else at all, some people will wear fancy dress for special or silly occasions, such as a hen party where the guests might sport feather boas, sequined caps and flashing badges indicating their status as a “vamp”, “flirt” or innocent “bride to be”.

Children love fancy dress gear as well, and there are many items for their birthday parties and other events that will really add an element of fun to the occasion. Young girls will love such “princess” or “fairy” items as wings, wands and beaded head bands, while boys might enjoy gear from professional trades like a fire fighter or policeman.

There are also a great many accessories and fancy dress items for holidays like Christmas, Easter and St. Patrick’s Day, when people attend parties and special public events, and a good vendor will have an ample supply of items like badges, glasses, hats and other props that can add fun to an all ready entertaining occasion.

Fancy dress and costumes do not have to “break the bank” they can serve to simply accessorize an outfit, or they can be the entire outfit on their own, the key is to remember that they are supposed to be fun, safe and comfortable, and those are the best things to remember when shopping for them.

Shopping for Fancy Dress Gear

Almost everyone has had to go out and about to find themselves fancy dress gear for a costume event, party or other occasion. While there are many resources for finding clothing, accessories and other paraphernalia, there are some basic considerations when purchasing fancy dress items.

The first thing to consider is the comfort of the piece. If someone is to wear a full costume it must fit well and allow a full range of movement. Many people have taken a terrible fall or ended up in an emergency hospital ward due to their inability to maneuver around curbing, stairs or doorways in their fancy dress or costume. Additionally, a shopper should try the gear on to be sure it does not tug, pull or irritate the body in any way as a night out could quickly be ruined by an irritating or ill-fitting ensemble.

The second consideration is the quality of the item. A shopper should be sure that their money will be well spent. Even if they are purchasing something as simple as a t-shirt or cap they should make sure that the vendor is supplying them with a good quality item that will offer some durability. Realistically the shopper cannot expect the same standards as average street wear, but something that will last at least several wearings without any possibility of wear or tear should be made available.

Variety is another important factor in shopping for fancy dress. This is important when it comes to finding “character” outfits. For example, if the shopper is looking for a Marie Antoinette gown and wig, a modern vendor will provide them with a few options and sizes, rather than a “one size fits all” selection. Additionally, if a shopper needs accessories for a hen party they should be able to get their hands on items like feather boas in assorted colors, fun glasses and hats and other items in a variety of styles and colors. Lack of variety means the vendor may not offer the quality the shopper is seeking.

Finally, specialization is a good guarantee of a satisfying selection of fancy dress and costume goods. Vendors such as party supply dealers are the sort that will usually make high quality fancy dress goods available in a wide variety of styles and prices. They will also be able to meet more than the “costume” need, but also supply fancy dress goods to children’s parties and annual special events or holiday occasions.

Fancy Dress Shops? are They All Dark, Dingy & Smelly?

Okay, Okay I know that fancy dress shops do not have the best of reputations. Ask a selection of members of the public and you will tend to get the same answers. Most people asked will say that fancy dress shops tend to be small, dark, badly organised and above all smelly. So what can we do to change this viewpoint?

One of the most common phrases I hear every day is when a new customer comes into my shop is “Oh, there’s no smell in here”, or, “I can smell clean washing”. To be honest that is how every fancy dress shop should be. First impressions are vitally important in gaining a person’s trust. Why would a customer want to stay in the shop, nevermind actually try some costumes on. Would you want to put smelly and grubby clothing on? I think not!

At Props n Frocks we will even wash costumes that a customer has tried on and has left lipstick or a bad smell on the costume. We will not allow any costume with a bad body odour or smoke smell to remain in the shop on its return from a party for fear of making the shop smell unpleasant. Are we paranoid about it? Well, yes we are, but does our shop smell bad? A resounding NO!

It goes without saying that every costume is washed on its return from a hire, even if the customer advises that the costume has not been worn. Surely every shop washes its costumes after each hire? I am afraid the answer is NO!

So, one of the first rules is to make sure that all costumes are cleaned and checked for damage after each hire. Once, washed, ironed and checked, the costume is then ready to go back out onto the rails. Hard work? Certainly, but well worth it from the numerous comments we receive every day. We generate business from people who were sceptical of hiring following a past experience from another shop.

Another common complaint that we hear is fancy dress shops letting a customer down. Costumes are regularly double booked, or just not available for when the customer comes in to collect. Bad organisation is the reason behind this. At Props n Frocks Fancy Dress we have used a computer system for the last 8 years. We have never had a double booking since the installation of this system. To us it is invaluable.

Being badly organised is not just restricted to the administration, but the general layout of the shop. Most look like an old fashioned jumble sale. Do you feel inclined to rummage through a mountain to find what you are looking for? The answer for most people is No! Costumes should be kept in theme or size sections, making the customer’s life much easier.

So, if a little time and effort is put into making your customer’s life more pleasant, you will be rewarded with an increase in sales. It is not too late to start new procedures. you’ll be pleased you did.

If you have liked what you have read, I am available as a fancy dress consultant either for a new start up business or to troubleshoot an existing business. I will guarantee that I can increase your sales by 10%.

Sexy Costumes have become the Norm

Dressing up in lingerie or sexy costumes is a surefire way to attract attention from your significant other. Men are visual beings and respond well to women who take the time to dress up for them.
Sexy costumes were once something women used to add excitement and fun in the bedroom. Of course they still do. These days, however, seeing sexy costumes everywhere is the norm. Whether it’s a Halloween party or a nightclub, it is not unusual to see common costumes turned into sexy diva outfits. When did sexy costumes become the norm? At what point did we move from dressing up being a scary disguise to dressing up being a way to tempt the opposite sex?
Sexy is the New Scary
Decades ago, it was popular to dress up in scary Halloween costumes. We have gradually swayed away from that concept as people have gotten more creative with their costume choices. The latest trend is to turn your average, everyday costume into a sexy costume. An idea as simple as a taxi driver is turned into a sexy taxi driver with short shorts and a snug and revealing top. Even the materials that these costumes are made from send a sexy vibe. Years ago, it certainly was not common to see Halloween costumes made of PVC or leather.
Scary and sexy combined is one trend that remains hot. The classic sexy cop is still a popular choice for sexy costumes. Other sexy and scary costumes include Mafia Girl, Masked Bandit, Scandalous Pirate, Devil Bride and Fantasy Batgirl.
Create a Bad Girl Image with Sexy Lingerie
A lot of women like to dress up sexy with a bad girl image. It shows they are strong, adventurous and have an inner passion waiting to get out. Sexy costumes that portray a bad girl image have been popular behind closed doors for many years, but now they are seeing the light of day as sexy becomes the new norm in women’s costumes. A few examples of this are the Rhinestone Cowgirl, Boxer Girl, Derby Diva and Sexy Secret Service.
Transforming Children’s Themes into Sexy Costumes
Suddenly, costumes that used to be considered childish are being made into sexy costumes as well. Some sexy costumes that are available are the Alice in Gothland, Sexy Tooth Fairy, Sexy Forest Nymph Fairy, Miss Moffit, Playboy Bo Peep, Sexy Red Riding Hood and Dorothy Girl. There are costumes that have been revamped to make them skimpier, more revealing and more appealing to men. There is even a Tin Girl costume a silver mini-dress with accessories that is modeled after the Tin Man from Wizard of Oz.
Sexy Holiday Costumes
While a holiday isn’t necessary to create a sensual mood, there are plenty of sexy holiday themed costumes for women that could drive a man wild. Basically, if you can imagine a sexy holiday costume, it probably already exists. You can find costumes form the Sexy Charmed Leprechaun and Playboy Bunny to the Christmas Elf, Sexy Santa, Candy Cane Mini Dress and Frosty Vixen.
Role Playing with Sexy Costumes
Create different moods by trying out several types of sexy costumes. Since sexy lingerie and costumes are becoming the norm, there is a wider variety available. This makes it easier to find the perfect sexy costume for role-playing that will spice up your love life.

Group fancy dress ideas

If you have a team of people who are all going to be attending the same fancy dress party get them all together and arrange to dress up as a group in outfits that follow a theme.   It doesn’t matter what sizes or shapes your group is made up of. There are fancy dress costumes to fit every size and suit every pocket.

Elect one person to organise the fancy dress for the whole party or event.   Email everyone you know and ask them if they want to belong to the group.  Start them off by sending them your ideas for a group fancy dress theme and ask everyone to reply back with their ideas for costumes.  Give them a time that they must get back to you by email or you’ll expel them from the group!  If you’re not tough they’ll take forever because we all leave everything till the last minute!  If you’re lucky and everyone has the same idea then obviously go with the most popular fancy dress theme.  If people send lots of ideas narrow it down to a few possibles and get people to just vote on three or four.    When you’ve got the chosen theme look online and choose your outfits and accessories.  Contact your online retailer and see if you can get discount for a bulk purchase.  Make sure you’ve chosen the accessories to go with the outfits so you can include them in the discount.Work out the costing and email everyone to let them know how much you need from them and get them to agree.  Get the money upfront before you buy.  People tend to remember to pay you before the event.  If it’s come and gone you’ll find it harder to get people to cough up the dough!!

Check the delivery date and wait till your fancy dress has arrived before you get everyone to come and collect.  You could even arrange a pre-party pickup night with a few drinks and nibbles to try on outfits and discuss transport.
