The Fun of Fancy Dress

As children most people wanted to become fantastic characters or heroic figures from television, the movies or favorite stories. Just because someone has “grown up” however, does not mean that they must abandon the joy of fancy dress and costumes.

Today there is an enormous amount of business around fancy dress and costumes for events that take place year round. Though the Halloween season is probably the time of year with the heaviest demand for ensembles, accessories and props, there are many other reasons that people don a disguise.

Among the most popular costumes are those of historic and famous individuals, from Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe, to Marie Antoinette and Robin Hood, people love to pretend they are their idols or heroes.

One of the biggest mistakes people make when choosing their fancy dress gear is to forget about props and makeup. Slipping into a white billowy dress and a platinum blonde wig might let people know you are “supposed” to be Marilyn Monroe, but an individual can really “wow” friends and family when they seek out the correct makeup and jewelry as well as appropriate shoes and other items that will complete the look.

Wearing fancy dress doesn’t mean becoming someone else at all, some people will wear fancy dress for special or silly occasions, such as a hen party where the guests might sport feather boas, sequined caps and flashing badges indicating their status as a “vamp”, “flirt” or innocent “bride to be”.

Children love fancy dress gear as well, and there are many items for their birthday parties and other events that will really add an element of fun to the occasion. Young girls will love such “princess” or “fairy” items as wings, wands and beaded head bands, while boys might enjoy gear from professional trades like a fire fighter or policeman.

There are also a great many accessories and fancy dress items for holidays like Christmas, Easter and St. Patrick’s Day, when people attend parties and special public events, and a good vendor will have an ample supply of items like badges, glasses, hats and other props that can add fun to an all ready entertaining occasion.

Fancy dress and costumes do not have to “break the bank” they can serve to simply accessorize an outfit, or they can be the entire outfit on their own, the key is to remember that they are supposed to be fun, safe and comfortable, and those are the best things to remember when shopping for them.

Shopping for Fancy Dress Gear

Almost everyone has had to go out and about to find themselves fancy dress gear for a costume event, party or other occasion. While there are many resources for finding clothing, accessories and other paraphernalia, there are some basic considerations when purchasing fancy dress items.

The first thing to consider is the comfort of the piece. If someone is to wear a full costume it must fit well and allow a full range of movement. Many people have taken a terrible fall or ended up in an emergency hospital ward due to their inability to maneuver around curbing, stairs or doorways in their fancy dress or costume. Additionally, a shopper should try the gear on to be sure it does not tug, pull or irritate the body in any way as a night out could quickly be ruined by an irritating or ill-fitting ensemble.

The second consideration is the quality of the item. A shopper should be sure that their money will be well spent. Even if they are purchasing something as simple as a t-shirt or cap they should make sure that the vendor is supplying them with a good quality item that will offer some durability. Realistically the shopper cannot expect the same standards as average street wear, but something that will last at least several wearings without any possibility of wear or tear should be made available.

Variety is another important factor in shopping for fancy dress. This is important when it comes to finding “character” outfits. For example, if the shopper is looking for a Marie Antoinette gown and wig, a modern vendor will provide them with a few options and sizes, rather than a “one size fits all” selection. Additionally, if a shopper needs accessories for a hen party they should be able to get their hands on items like feather boas in assorted colors, fun glasses and hats and other items in a variety of styles and colors. Lack of variety means the vendor may not offer the quality the shopper is seeking.

Finally, specialization is a good guarantee of a satisfying selection of fancy dress and costume goods. Vendors such as party supply dealers are the sort that will usually make high quality fancy dress goods available in a wide variety of styles and prices. They will also be able to meet more than the “costume” need, but also supply fancy dress goods to children’s parties and annual special events or holiday occasions.

Swashbuckling movies:Pirates of the Caribbean Sinbad the sailor Treasure Island  Swiss Family Robinson Peter Pan Muppet Treasure Island  The Crimson PirateBlackbeard

Pirate fancy dress costumes can be home made or shop bought.  If you want to home make your costume rifle through your clothes to find old shirts, skirts and trousers that can be cut up.  If you’re not a hoarder and you can’t find any, ask your friends if they have anything you can cut up to make a pirate fancy dress.  If you’ve exhausted friends and family then scour the charity shops.  You will definitely find something you can cut up to make breeches or a tattered shirt.  Use cotton string for belts and buy some eye patches and theatrical make up.  Pirates are portrayed with heavy black eye make up and lots of tangled flowing black hair and beards.  These can be bought online and should be in stock for a fast delivery.  The wig can be worn over and over again so it’s a good investment.

If you want an authentic pirate fancy dress then buy your costume online.  They’re a good price, well made and you’ll find lots of choice.  You can choose from a lowly rogue pirate, a Captain Hook or an authentic Captain Jack Sparrow outfit from Pirates of the Caribbean.  They come with belts, buckles, trousers and waistcoats.  Check whether the outfit comes complete with a pirate hat and sword.  Usually the price will determine what’s included.  Boots are an extra but some outfits have some kind of boot covers so you can wear them over your normal footwear.

Ladies Fancy Dress Ideas

Ladies fancy dress can be very easily put together without spending too much money.

For a seventies fancy dress costume have a look round your local charity shops.  You should be able to find some flared jeans and flowery tops.  Add a poncho to a pair of jeans and flowered shirt and you have a simple but effective ladies fancy dress costume.  Ponchos come in all sizes, colours and materials.  They were fashionable in the 70s and even now they can still be found in some shops.  They are used instead of a jacket to keep you warm but can be made from finer material and used as a top.  Unless you’re attending an outdoor fancy dress party, wear a thin poncho for comfort.  If it’s an outside venue then go for a wool poncho for warmth.  If you can’t find one in the shops try making one yourself. They are very easy to make from an old blanket. Find instructions online for the basic outline and then just cut a hole for your head to go through.

Patchwork handbags and clothes were a fashion item of the seventies. Ladies can accessorise a basic jeans and blouse fancy dress costume with a patchwork leather bag.  Buy one in outrageous colours.  Markets are a great source for patchwork leather handbags and they are cheap because they are made with off cuts of leather.

Alternatively wear a flowery blouse with huge sleeves with your jeans or skirt.  70s ladies wore blouses made of chiffon and silk with psychedelic patterns.

Finish your ladies fancy dress costume off with a shaggy coat.  These were made from fake suede material with a thick pile shaggy lining.  Wear with a pair of knee length boots.

Ladies Fancy Dress

Ladies fancy dress – 6 tips for choosing your costume:

• Jot some ideas down about what you’d like to wear. Think of the actual outfit rather than a specific costume: trousers, mini skirt, long dress, outrageous comic character costume, sexy costume.  This will give you a starting point to build your costume on.

• Does quality matter or is the fun element more important? – if you were attending a masquerade wedding then obviously the quality of the outfit and matching accessories must be pretty high standard and you should think about hiring a outfit or buying one of the better quality costumes.

• Will you wear the outfit more than once?  Many ladies fancy dress can be worn more than once and are suitable for numerous occasions. If you are on a budget then choose an outfit that you’d be just as comfortable wearing to a family fancy dress celebration or the office Xmas party.

• Should you take comfort into consideration? Or is the Wow impact more important to you on this occasion? Visualise your entrance to the party, would the outfit make you feel comfortable, squirm with embarrassment or are you excited just thinking about it?  Decide on the impact you want to have.

• Jot down some accessories you would love to wear and make a list of the accessories you would never wear.  If you can’t stand to wear a mask then this step will rule out the fancy dress costumes that are reliant on masks.  Do you want to allocate a large part of your budget to accessories or would you rather make this as minimal as possible?  Choosing the finishing touches for your costume can be fun and sometimes it’s the accessories that will determine whether your fancy dress outfit will work.

• Does it come in my size? Ladies fancy dress sizing is pretty easy to work out and good websites will have measurement information or will sell their outfits in dress sizes. Once you’ve determined what size you need then check on availability. Can you order this outfit in your size? Writing a checklist of do’s and don’ts for your costume will give you a good overall picture of the category of outfits you should be looking at.  Start looking for outfits plenty of time before the party, take your time and if you don’t like your first choice go back and start again.

Childrens Fancy Dress

Fancy dress is great for adults because they have an excuse to dress up and be silly, they don’t have to be the sensible and respectful adult they are on a daily basis, for one night they can dress up and be anyone they want to be. Fortunately for kids they can dress up, be silly, and play make believe all day everyday! Fancy dress for kids isn’t limited to fancy dress parties or Halloween; it’s for everyday use, for when your friends come round to play, for going to the supermarket because mummy has run out of cheese, or simply for watching the Disney channel before bath time. Any time of day and any day of the week is perfect for dressing up when you are a child.

With so many opportunities for dress up there are many fancy dress costumes to choose from for kids, here is a look at a few of them.

Fancy Dress Princesses – a common concept amongst little girls is that they love Princesses and fairytales. They love the Princess’ pretty dress, their beautiful hair, and the way they dance and sing, they love everything about them and want to be just like them. There are many costumes along these lines such as Belle, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, or a generic Princess or Fairy costume. An idea to think about is a 2 in 1 costume, you can buy a costume that is reversible, for example a dress that is Snow White on one side, turn it inside out and it’s Belle – perfect for your little princess.

Fancy Dress Super Heroes – now you may think your little boy is a hero anyway but he will want to dress up and prove it to the world! Usually little boys love to dress up as their favourite action man or super hero whether it is Superman flying around from one sofa to the other, or Spiderman climbing up the walls, or maybe it’s the Incredible Hulk (hopefully he won’t rip the costume apart playing this one) but whichever your child’s fantasy hero is there is a costume to choose from.

Just Like Mum or Dad – are you a nurse, a policeman, a doctor, or something along those lines? Kids copy everything you do and say, they always want to be like and dress up like their mummy or daddy. There are many kiddie costumes of uniforms such as the fireman, the S.W.A.T policeman, the ER doctor, the paramedic, and many more. Maybe you have something from work you can tailor to fit your child, or maybe you need to buy the costume but they can borrow a few items that fit well to finish off the outfit, have a look around and see what you can come up with.

Fancy Dress Planning: Fun Before the Party

Fancy dress parties are a common happening in the UK. No matter what the occasion – whether a stag or hen party, birthday, or just a night out on the town – Brits love to dress up in costumes to party. But while showing up to a party in a costume is certainly one of the best parts of the fancy dress experience, the fun actually starts much earlier. Half the fun in going to a fancy dress party is in actually deciding on – and finding – what you’re going to dress up as. Some people like to surprise the party with their unique, self-made ideas, while others enjoy teaming up with their friends for a collective fancy dress effort. And groups certainly have a lot of fancy dress costume options to choose from, ranging from movie and TV characters, to rock bands and era costumes. Among these options, film character costumes – especially those from well-known or older films – have been rising in popularity over recent years. This likely has something to do with the fact that many fancy dress party guests can instantly recognise such costumes, as well as relate to them. From Indiana Jones and Beetlejuice to any of the characters from Star Wars or Star Trek, film character costumes are currently among the most popular for fancy dress parties. Certain film groups are also particularly popular with fancy dress group efforts – for example, the characters from Top Gun. Dressing up in a Top Gun fancy dress costume leaves no doubt in party guests as to who you’ve shown up as, simply because Maverick, Goose and Charlie are all so distinctive. Costumes for these characters are also fairly simple to find or put together, with no requirements that are out of the ordinary. With some large 80s sunglasses, white aviator uniforms, and – in the case of Charlie – a hair crimper – you can pull together a team of Top Gun’s most popular characters. Of course, it couldn’t hurt if your team can sing “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin”. Ultimately, planning for a fancy dress party – whether you’re going as a solo character or a team of themed characters – is a great way to have some fun together before the actual party. So get creative with your costume ideas, and make an entrance to remember at your next fancy dress party.
