The Radio City Rockettes started out in 1925 making them 83 years old this year, and incredibly this amazing dance troupe is not only going strong but hosting crowded theaters every year. They started out as the “Missouri Rockets,” debuting in St. Louis to the fulfillment of a long-time dream for creator Russell Markert, who had been inspired by the Zeigfeld Follies of 1922. He finally retired in 1971, but not until he had left his mark permanently imbedded on the face of show business. Throughout his time as the Rockette’s creator, stage director and choreographer, Markert kept a strict format for the girl’s performances. 36 Rockettes would perform intricate routines moving as one dancer.
